Tree House Books
At Tree House Books our mission is to nurture healthy reading identities. Our objectives are to provide access to high quality books, foster healthy attitudes towards reading, promote an awareness and appreciation of African-American culture through books, and support people, especially children, as they make meaning of text.
At Circle of Hope, we support the mission of Tree House Books through one of our compassion teams. One of the main ways we do that is through assisting in the summer program, Words on Wheels. Through this program, volunteers deliver books to kids in the 19121 zip code, promoting reading during a time when school isn’t able to fulfill that need.
An Update from Alene:
Our compassion team, Friends of Tree House Books was charged with a book drive earlier this year and we collected a bunch of new books with representation for Tree House to use for Words on Wheels, their book delivery service. They were thrilled with the books, so thank you for your efforts if you donated! If you didn’t get a chance and would still like to donate books, their Amazon wishlist is still active. You can buy directly from that and have the books delivered to Tree House Books.
Due to some challenges this year, they have pushed back their Words on Wheels program to August, instead of July. They are asking for last minute help if you are able! The stipulations for volunteering are: 1) being free Thursday nights in August, and 2) attending their People’s Assembly on Tuesday August 2nd. Their goal this year is not merely to have books delivered to kids, but to run a block party program each week during delivery. If this sounds up your alley, please contact Alene Brunkhurst as soon as possible!
Again, if you can’t volunteer your time, consider buying a book for their program!
