Luces Y Dulces (Lights and Candy): Fundraiser for Puerto Rico

On Saturday November 4, Circle of Hope on Ridge Avenue is hosting a costume party. Tuesday was Halloween but we decided to extend the costume party a little bit longer. Last year, we hosted a Halloween-type party that mostly involved families. This year, we’re expanding on that idea and adding some real purpose to our party. We’re calling it ‘Luces y Dulces,’ or ‘Lights and Candy’ in English. We turned this year’s edition of our costume party into a fundraiser for ongoing relief efforts in Puerto Rico. After Hurricane Maria devastated the small island of Puerto Rico, it brought a consciousness to many of our minds in the nation and particularly in our community that we probably cannot depend on the government’s efforts alone to give the aid necessary for such a large and extensive recovery effort. Halloween will have come and gone but there’s an ongoing crisis in Puerto Rico that needs our attention.

We are partnering with Mennonite Disaster Service to help alleviate the suffering in Puerto Rico. Mennonite Disaster Service has a long history of helping those in the most desperate situations. As Circle of Hope, we our determined to make a difference even when we cannot be in the particular location that is devastated. ‘Luces y Dulces’ will be a fun event with food, dancing, games for kids and more. We are asking for a donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children. While we can’t all get to Puerto Rico, we can make our presence felt. We hope to see you at 5720 Ridge Avenue from 5-9 p.m. November 4.
