Reaching across different waves

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. – 1 Corinthians 2:12-3

During August we have been exploring the “gifts bestowed on us by God.”

One of the ways people reveal these gifts among us is with their music—for instance, Dan McGowan. Dan has written a lot of music with his brother Pat and The Tea Club (Pat third and Dan fourth from the left, above). Lately he has plied his trade with worship music.

The lyrics in the song linked below might be right for you if you’ve lost touch with Jesus or haven’t met Him yet. God might be communicating to you in “different waves.” And you might be communicating in ways you don’t fully understand yet. The song is appropriately spacey. “What exactly are we talking about here?” Well, that’s the point—we don’t completely know.

Some Protestants are doubling down on their certainty these days. They intend to win a culture “war.” So it is refreshing to have a more biblical view of following Jesus in Dan’s song. The quote from the Bible above teaches the typical way humans, like you, do things won’t reveal “the gifts God has bestowed on us.” We need to experience “different waves.”

When you come to one of our Sunday meetings, I hope we are all honest and humble enough to admit we don’t know everything yet. Dan’s song can help. Many people can relate to the thought, “I think I’m reaching for you across different waves.” Being translated, that is, “I am not sure what I am doing, but here I am doing it!” That seems like realistic worship to me. Try it out. Here’s a link of Dan giving the gifts “bestowed” on him unplugged.
