Season 6, Episode 22
Someone Asked: “Do I have to feel bad about myself to be a Christian?”
Are we a “wretch” or a “worm,” as some old hymns say? Pastors explore this strand within Christianity that heavily focuses on human brokenness. The idea that we have to earn our worth or God’s love is one often buttressed by a culture that promotes heavy individualism and self-creating. We are surrounded with Jesus’ connection to us and find ourselves in him, and it’s hard to separate ourselves from that without it causing a form of self-despondency. God loves and accepts me. God sees me as a full person and now I can live into that fullness. God doesn’t transform me and make me whole merely based on me, but who God is and God’s all-encompassing love.
About Someone Asked: The Circle of Hope pastors spend a lot of time in conversation. We’ve collected some topics that people actually ask us. We choose one in which we’ll spend about five minutes every other week. Let’s see what happens!
