Today’s Bible reading and an excerpt
Read Romans 12:9-21
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live in peace with everyone.”
More thoughts for meditation
In this passage, Paul urges the Roman believers to live with a sincere love that does not stoop to evil but lives with joyful optimism. In the face of despair, is joy and optimism possible? Can we turn our face to the sun?
In The Universe as Primal Scream, Tracey K. Smith offers this ode to joy,
Maybe the mother is still proud
Of the four pink lungs she nursed
To such might. Perhaps, if they hit
The magic decibel, the whole building
Will lift-off, and we’ll ride to glory
Like Elijah. If this is it—if this is what
Their cries are cocked toward—let the sky
Pass from blue, to red, to molten gold,
To black. Let the heaven we inherit approach.
Suggestions for action
Consider the ways that you create community. Even in a shut-down social and work world, how do you connect and keep moving with the Holy Spirit in a way that connects and creates? Where can you grow joy and optimism?
Pray: May I hear your cry and the scream of the life of the universe, Lord. May I turn my face to the sun and see joy.
