Come Thou Fount

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount!1 I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;2
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold3 of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,4
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone5 to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts6 above.

1 — The hill named Golgotha outside of Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified
2 — A stone stood up to honor the memory of God’s work on behalf of Israel. 1 Sam. 7:12 — “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer [“stone of help.”], saying, ‘Thus far has the LORD helped us.’”
3 — A fold is a place where sheep are kept.
4 — A “fetter” is a chain or shackle for the feet
5 — “Prone” is “having the tendency or inclination.”
6 — “Courts” as in the palace of the king, his throne room in particular

Litany of Blessing for our new covenant members and for all of us who work to make it and keep it.

Holy God, today our covenant with you and with one another grows to include friends new and old. We receive them as our newest partners with joy. Bless them in this step of faith and give them courage to love like you.

As we make this covenant, the pandemic rages on. We’ve come so far since it started, but we still have a long way to go. As we continue to work to protect everyone from this terrible disease, help us to remember that your help is great, Lord. We won’t get far without it.

As the rich get even richer sometimes directly because of the pandemic, many essential workers suffer and many others are left without resources for basic needs. You invite us to remember that everything belongs to you and if we are blessed, it is so that we can be a blessing. Help us to be generous with all that we have, giving to and sharing with those around us. It’s hard to disbelieve the lie of scarcity, but your help is great, Lord. We won’t get far without it.

As we work to realize the promise of beloved community and the new humanity you call us into, we face every day the sins of racism, white supremacy, homophobia, and ableism, just to name a few. Help us to interrupt these systems of oppression as we encounter them in our lives, and even in our own hearts. We are all invited into the new humanity. As you draw us into it, help us to be willing to acknowledge the harm caused by oppression among us, and to repent. It’s hard work, but your help is great, Lord. We won’t get far without it.

As we face an uncertain future, we are grateful that you are replanting our church, including in ways we wouldn’t have expected. Help us to revive the bonds of friendship, community, and mutuality among our friends in Philly and S. Jersey, and thank you for connecting us with friends new and old around the country. Being one church with congregations and cells throughout the region and beyond requires imagination and perseverance. As we follow you into what’s next for Circle of Hope, may we trust you, and one another. When that seems difficult, remind us again that your help is great, Lord. We won’t get far without it.

You have all authority in heaven and earth and you promise to be with us always. You recommission us, even in our uncertainty, to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing each other in your name like we’re doing today. So keep forming us into a circle of hope. Today, we reaffirm our baptisms and covenant, banking on you being with us. When I say “because” y’all say “Jesus you are with us”-

In worship and prayer, in solitude and solidarity we commit to deepen our disciplines together because

Jesus you are with us.

We study the Bible and listen to the Holy Spirit, individually and together because

Jesus you are with us

We are members of one team and we cross boundaries to include just as we have been included because

Jesus you are with us.

We offer our money, time, energy and grace to our common life because

Jesus you are with us

We will seek to show your love in practical ways as you enable us to be truth tellers and healing agents because

Jesus you are with us

Loving our neighbors, we serve where there is need here and around the world because

Jesus you are with us.

We wait on you Jesus for all that is next. We know that your love will not fail us now and your Spirit will lead us to do what you have given us to do, for everyone who is next. AMEN.

The Joy of the Lord is My Strength

Verse 1
Though the tears may fall,
My song will rise, my song will rise to You
Though my heart may fail,
My song will rise, my song will rise to You
While there’s breath in my lungs,
I will praise You, Lord

In the dead of night,
I’ll lift my eyes, I’ll lift my eyes to You
Though the waters rise,
I’ll lift my eyes, I’ll lift my eyes to You
While there’s hope in this heart,
I will praise You, Lord

Chorus (x2)
The joy of the Lord is my strength!
The joy of the Lord is my strength!
In the darkness I’ll dance in the shadows I’ll sing
The joy of the Lord is my strength!

Verse 2
When I cannot see You with my eyes,
Let faith arise to You
When I cannot feel Your hand in mine,
Let faith arise to You
God of mercy and love,
I will praise You, Lord

How You shine with glory, Lord of light,
I feel alive with You
In Your presence now I come alive,
I am alive with You
There is strength when
I say, “I will praise You, Lord”
